CANDY SANTA

I finished another Santa this past weekend and now all three of the Santa heads that I sculpted and showed you way back when have bodies. With this last one I couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted him to be holding. I tried out about a dozen different ideas but none of them looked right. I had to settle on something so he would be finished and I could paint him but I’m not sure if I like what I settled on. I need some feedback here. What do you think?

I just love candy canes and peppermint lollipops. Don't you?

The candy is made using cold porcelain clay that has been painted. I tried coloring the clay first but didn’t care for the results.
Here are some photos of the Santa who is holding the candy.

It seems to me the finish on this piece has a lot more shine to it than it should considering I used a matte sealer.

You may have noticed this Santa doesn't have a scarf or hat sticking out of his pockets. That's because his cloak has a hood.

The three Santa sculpts are now complete. It would seem the doll and bear balance is now out of whack. You know how important it is to maintain a balance.

That's all I've got for now. There are some projects in the works. All are quite different from what I have been doing and should present me with some challenges.

Have a great week and as always, thanks for stopping by.

LETTER FROM CAMP

Dear Mom,
We are having a splendid time here at Camp Good Bear. We have made so many new friends and have finally met our blogging friends in the fur.
On our first night at camp we had our first camp fire and it was so much fun. We learned some new songs that we’re going to teach everyone when we get back home. Bellamine’s favorite is the one that starts out “The ants go marching one by one” and she learned the whole thing the first night and wants to sing it all of the time. She even marches while she sings it. One of the bearcelors told us a really scary ghost story and we all screamed and then laughed and it was so much fun. Wilbur showed us how to make Damper on a Stick and when we get home we’re going to show you how to make them because they are so good and easy to make too.

Us listening to the scary story with one of our new friends. He brought marshmellows to snack on and said we could share. Wilbur is cooking us a Damper and when it's ready we're going to pour honey in the hole. We'll show you how it's done when we get home.

That's what a Damper looks like. The bear sitting next to Wilbur couldn't get his fill of them and wanted more.

Prudence is just as we thought she would be and although she is a camp bearcelor and has loads of responsibilities she always has time for her friends.
Believe it or not, Clarissa has made some friends. She and Blossom have become besties and spend lots of time telling each other and everyone who will listen how beautiful and special they are. Sissy looks so much like Prudence but they are so different from one another. Both are a lot of fun and such wonderful tales to tell.
Sweet Pea and Wilbur have become best mates and you’d think they’ve known each other for ever.

One day some of us went hiking on one of the trails and climbed some rocks and found a bird’s nest but the birds weren’t there anymore. We gathered all sorts of neat things to use making some craft things.

They encourage us to make crafts and since we like making crafts we work on something every day. Mom, we’ve already spent our camp money so please bring more when you come to visit next weekend on Bearents Day.
We’re having fun and we miss you and the hug.
Love and kisses from your girls,
Bellamine, Clarissa and Wendy

I'VE GOT MAIL

This was a great week for mail at my house. As some of you know I won the magic wand that the Angry Gnome and his very talented crew created for the Celebrate Oz event that was held on July 19th. Our mail carrier delivered it to the door on Wednesday. It was inside this humongous box marked very fragile and when I carefully cut open the top flaps I found  a piece of paper with a warning that said,

"Careful opening the wand. I hope you don't hear any sound of broken glass! I have bubble wrap and taped all around & the top paper part is fragile, as well as the glass bowl. Oh heck- maybe you better not even touch it! Just leave it wrapped in the box!"

Well, that didn't sound like any fun at all so I threw caution to the wind and dug right in. Talk about bubble wrap. There were three kinds of bubble wrap and then there were the Styrofoam peanuts and all of the tape and then more bubble wrap. I've got enough packaging materials now I won't have to buy any for years to come. It took forever to get to the wand but when I finally did I was so excited I nearly dropped it. I've got to have a display stand built for it but for now I have it stuck in a vase full of sea shells.

Isn't it beautiful?!? There is so much detail to this piece that I can't even begin to tell you about it all. I was going to take more pictures but as fate would have it, the camera battery went dead. I had taken other photos with it earlier this morning so I managed to get a pic of what came in yesterday's mail as well.

I've just added another photo trying to show the detail in the globe of the wand but this is as good as it's going to get. I'm getting a reflection off of the glass so you really can't see the witch and the flying monkey or see how the poppies and everything fits together so magically.

You remember Dillywink my Munchkin from the Oz posts? That was his name here but his new momma gave him a nickname, Dilly Boy and now that's what he prefers to be called.  He's so happy at his new home so he asked his new momma if he could send me something as a thank you for sending him to live with his new family and she told him he could send me anything his little heart desired so he chose to send me these:

Aren't they wonderful?? It's a  set of 18 of the most delightful Oz ACEO cards and I was flabbergasted when I opened the package and saw them. It wasn't the first time that I'd seen them they were on the July 19th Celebrate Oz blog party post on Ireland Brady's site. I'd never visited this site before and hadn't seen any of the work created by Karen Anne but once I did see it I wanted to see more. I took my daughter blog hoping to see what everyone else had posted for the Oz celebration and she fell in love with the artwork on this site too. Karen Anne is not only a talented artist but also one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. That is one of the wonderful things about blogging. You meet some of the nicest people. I am so happy I took part in the Oz celebration and am thankful for the new friends I've made by doing so. Thank you so much April and Karen Anne and you too Linda for bringing so much joy by being the lovely people that you are.

Remember the pale Santa in the last of my Oz posts? I finally got him painted and took a few photos of him. I've named him "2 B & a D" (two bears and a doll).

I have one more Santa to finish and that will take care of those three Santa heads that played "What's my Line" awhile ago.

Wishing you a happy weekend. Thanks for stopping by.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY SALE

The North Pole Gift Shop
is having a Christmas in July sale

This has been a hot dry summer where the temperatures have been way up there and we've had very little much need rain in most of the country. We've been told that thinking of cool things can help to make us feel cooler. That's probably the reasoning behind the Christmas in July sales. If we're thinking Christmas we're thinking snow and what better way to feel cooler than that? That being said, to help everyone feel cooler I've decided to hold a Christmas in July sale.

Since I've always loved a good Christmas in July sale and because one of my new favorite things is BOGO sales  I've decided to combine the two and have a

Christmas in July
BOGO Sale

So, between now and July 31st, I will be having a buy one get one free sale. Buy one Santa or snowman at regular price and get a second Santa or snowman of equal value for free.

What this means is all of the items shown on my North Pole Gift Shop page (click on the tab at the top of the page)  will be sold at that price. Two items for the price of one. If for some reason you can only find one Santa or snowman that you like I will sell one item at half price.

If you see something there and hopefully there will be two somethings that you like or if you have any questions or want to see more photos,  please contact me by email.

A portion of the proceeds from this sale will be donated to help Brenda with unexpected medical bills. See the button on the side bar to learn more.

This sale ends on July 31.
I accept payment by check or money order only.

THE PARTY IS OVER

Chapter four
Here we are again. You’re undoubtedly thinking to yourself, “What else could this din-a-ling possibly have to say about Oz that she hasn’t already said in the past three posts.  You have to understand the reason I keep going on and on it because I find Oz to be so amazing and wonderful and I’ve always wanted to live there. It all started when I was eight years old and I read my first Oz book. I was completely head over heels in love with this magical place. I’ve always thought that it is quite possible these books are what turned me into someone who loves to read. By now you all have a fairly good idea of how crazy I am about Oz and all things Oz so instead of giving you any more facts gleaned from the many books or the wonderful movie I’m going to pack it all in. Yep, I’m not going to say another word on the subject. Instead I’m going to let you take a peek behind the curtain and see what the others have to say before we get to the part where we find out where Dillywink will be heading off to no doubt the main reason you’re here.

"I was beginning to think she was going to make this party last all week. There must be something wrong with the workings of her mind. No one in their right mind would go on and on like this for so many days."

"Thank goodness that's over with. If she had made us pose for one more photo I was out of there. It's such a relief to be sitting down, these diamond slippers are killing my feet. I don't suppose any of you know where my wand got off to?"

"Stop your whining, at least you can sit down. She's done something to me so now I can't even sit and these shoes are pinching my toes and mashing my bunions. I've noticed you can't seem to keep a hold on that wand of yours. You're probably sitting on it."

"Dorothy, did you hear I'm getting a new home?"

"Yes Dillywink, I heard."

"Dear, we've all heard about you getting a new home so there's no need to keep telling us. It's not likely we're going to forget.
Now my bottom is going numb from sitting here and my dress is starting to wrinkle."

"Just listen to you whiny babies. None of you have anything to be complaining about. I don't see any of you stuck in a plastic bag. Plastic doesn't breath you know and it's probably 110 degrees in  here and my nose itches and I can't move my arms so I can't scratch it. I don't suppose one of you two could lend a hand."

"We didn't even notice you laying here. Who are you and what are you doing in That bag?"

"What do you mean, who am I? I'm the Red Queen, that's who I am. Who the heck are you two? I don't recall seeing either of you until this morning but of course I've been laying on a shelf and haven't seen much of anything since she stuck me in this bag and surely you don't think I agreed to being stuck in here. How stupid are you?"

"Hey lady, did you hear I'm getting a new home?"

"Yes you dumb twit! I've heard you say that at least a dozen times now. Instead of being so annoying do something useful and scratch my nose since neither one of those other two would do it and can't get a hand free."

"Sure thing. Hey maybe I can help you get out of the bag. Whatcha' think, Queenie?"

"Well, would ya look at this?!? There's a little girl hiding in here."

"How humiliating!! This is no way for the queen to be treated!
First I'm stuffed in a bag and then hidden away on a shelf and now this?!? That last bit is the final insult! I'm the queen and this will not do!

Off with his head!"

"Hey Mister, did you hear I'm getting a new home?"

"Yes, I've heard, and about 30 times in the past half hour. Why don't you give it a rest son?"

"I see you've found your wand Glinda, can I touch it?"

"Sure, but only with one finger. It has powerful magic you know."

"What's with the old man over there? Do any of you recognize him?"

"There's something wrong with him. Did you notice except for his head he's all pale and colorless? You three need to go over there find out who he is and what he's doing here."

"So, you say your name is Santa Claus and you are a symbol of Christmas and you know when someone is naughty or nice and you bring toys to the good little girls and boys? That's your story?"

"Yes, on Christmas Eve I get in my sleigh that is pulled by eight flying reindeer and we fly throughout the night from house to house and I leave presents in the stockings hanging from the mantel of the fireplace or under a decorated tree."

"And you say you get into the houses by going down the chimney? Isn't that a bit risky? I mean, what if there's a fire or what if there isn't a fireplace so there's no chimney?
Another thing, how do you know who's naughty or nice? Oh, and where did you get reindeer that fly? Are you some powerful wizard?"

I think you have some idea of what it is like around here so without further ado I'm going to announce who has been chosen to provide a home for Dillywink.

Before telling you who it is I'll explain the process that was used in selecting who it would be. It's a simple but well thought out process and it goes something like this:

"Ken do me a favor and pick a number between zero and ten." (me)

"HUh? What time is it? Is it time for breakfast?" (my son Ken)

"No it's still too early for breakfast. Just pick a number between zero and ten, okay?" (me)

"Why did you wake me up if it isn't time for breakfast?" (Ken)

"Just do it for me, okay?" (Me)

"Eleven." (Ken)

"Real funny! Now, just pick a number will you? I don't want to get out the throwing knives or dart board." (Me) These are methods used for choosing winners in previous giveaways.

"Whatever! Six. Okay, now will you leave me alone so I can go back to sleep?" (Ken)

So looking at the list I see the name in the number six position is:

Ireland Brady.

Ireland Brady would you please get back to me with your mailing address so I can send little Dillywink on his way? As you've probably noticed he's really excited about heading out to his new home.

"Dorothy I'm going to miss you most of all."
"Yeah, yeah Dillywink, I'll miss you too."

"Does anybody know why she's got so many boxes out? Why would she need so many? Look, there are more of those bags like the one the queen is in. You don't think she's going to stick us in one of those do you?"

Thanks for putting up with my silliness and for coming back day after day to celebrate with me. It's been fun for me and I hope for you as well. And a special thanks to you Oma Linda for hosting this fun affair. I know you had to give me a shove to get me started but once I did get started there was just no stopping me. I so enjoyed seeing what all of the others who were participating in this affair had to offer and I even won a giveaway. Until next time.

Enjoy your week and as always, thanks for stopping by.

The Oz Party Still Going Strong

Chapter Three
Since this is the third day of my celebrating I’m beginning to get a bit loopy. I may be close to having my fill of Oz for a while so after this post there will only be one more day to see whatever else I might have come up with. If you’ve been here throughout my Oz posts you’ve either learned a lot about Oz or are sure I’m over the rainbow and need to be put away somewhere that has soft walls, bars on the windows and locks on the doors.
Today I have yet another  subject to cover and that is all there is to know about Glinda the Good Witch of Oz not just a pretty face she’s smart and powerful too, or at least this was what I thought when I was a young girl reading the books and watching the movie.
When I saw Glinda the first time I was so impressed. Hey, I was a young girl and in those days I was all about pretty and shiny things. (Still am) What little girl wouldn’t want a dress just like the one in the movie? I could picture myself wearing that dress and spinning in circles and watching that dress float out around me. Heck, it floated out to infinity without the spinning. I’d never seen anything like it. Then there was that gorgeous crown. Can you name any little girl you know who wouldn’t want to have that crown? I still want that crown and I’m not that little girl anymore.  Then you have to give Glinda credit for making an entrance.  Now that’s showmanship if nothing else. Compared to the other grown women in the movie, Auntie Em, nice but as plain as bread pudding and that awful Miss Gulch who scared the little wimpy girl I was back then so badly I had nightmares where she was chasing me on her bicycle. Then the Wicked Witch who looked so much like that awful Miss Gulch except maybe even scarier and compared to them Glinda was like nothing I’d ever seen and everything I wanted to be.

My idea of Glinda

Glinda and Dorothy in Munchkin Land

As I’ve mentioned a time or two in the past few days I read all of the Oz books that our public library had to offer and I continued reading them through the years whenever I found one at the book store or library. These are some of the things those books had to say about Glinda the Good Witch.
Baum's 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz refers to Glinda as the Good Witch of the South. She finally gets Dorothy home by telling her of the power of the silver slippers. She gets the Golden Cap from Dorothy, and uses it to get the Scarecrow back to the Emerald city, the Tin Man to the land of the Winkies, and the Lion to a nearby forest, areas which the characters have been made rulers of. Later books call her a "Sorceress" rather than a "witch." Baum's writings make clear that he did not view witches as inherently wicked or in league with the Devil, so this change was probably meant to signal that Glinda's knowledge and command of magic surpassed that of a witch.
In the books, Glinda is depicted as a beautiful young woman with long, rich red hair and blue eyes, wearing a pure white dress. When I made my version of Glinda I chose to go with the movie version, dressing her all in pink. She is much older than her appearance would suggest, but "knows how to keep young in spite of the many years she has lived" - a fact that is established in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by the ‘Soldier With Green Whiskers.’ She has ruled the Quadling Country ever since she overthrew the Wicked Witch of the South during the period when Ozma's grandfather was king of Oz.
She plays the most active role in finding and restoring Princess Ozma, the rightful heir, to the throne of Oz, the search for whom takes place in the second book, The Marvelous Land of Oz, although Glinda had been searching for Ozma ever since the princess disappeared as a baby. It may well be that she didn't overthrow the Wicked Witches of the East and West, despite being more powerful than they were, because she wanted all of Oz to be unified under its rightful ruler, Ozma, first. After Ozma's ascent to the throne, Glinda continues to help the Queen of Oz to shape the future of the Land of Oz as a whole, no longer confining her powers to guarding her Quadling Kingdom in the South alone; true to her character, Glinda does not interfere in affairs of State unless Ozma seeks her counsel or help specifically.
In addition to her vast knowledge of magic Glinda employs various tools, charms, and instruments in her workshop. The Emerald City of Oz reveals that she owns a Great Book of Records that allows her to track everything that goes on in the world from the instant it happens. Starting with The Road to Oz she trains the formerly humbug Wizard in magic; he becomes a formidable practitioner, but acknowledges that she is more powerful yet.
Glinda lives in a palace near the southern border of the Quadling Country, attended by fifty beautiful maidens from each country of Oz. She also employs a large army of female soldiers, with which she takes on General Jinjur's Army of Revolt, who had conquered the Emerald City in The Marvelous Land of Oz. Men are not prominent in Glinda's court.
Glinda is strongly protective of her subjects in the South. She creates gated communities for the rabbits of Bunnybury and the paper dolls of Miss Cuttenclip, showing a personal interest in the concerns of not only the humanoid Quadlings, but also the other inhabitants of her jurisdiction.
In The Emerald City of Oz, when Ozma goes to consult Glinda about the security of her Ozian citizens, the Sorceress seals off all of Oz from the ‘Great Outside World,’ making Oz invisible to the eyes of mortals flying overhead in airplanes and such. However, unlike Ozma, Glinda is willing to ignore strife and oppression in remote corners of Oz like Jinxland and the Skeezers territory as long as it does not threaten the Emerald City or innocent outsiders. The readers are left with the sense that Glinda is experienced and seasoned to the point of knowing that there isn't a magic cure for everything, and that certain things cannot be changed or perhaps should not be changed for better or for worse.
One of the more obscure facts about Glinda is that she created the Forbidden Fountain with the Waters of Oblivion, at the center of Oz, whose waters redeemed a former King of Oz who was exceptionally cruel. This happened "many centuries ago" according to Queen Ozma (again alluding to Glinda's advanced age), and it is this fountain that saves Oz from the invading Nome King and his allies in The Emerald City of Oz , by making them forget their nefarious intentions. Glinda clearly made the Fountain at a point in Oz's history when the Land was unified under one of the members of the Royal Family of Oz, albeit a tyrannical king in this isolated incident, and so she was able to intervene in a way that she couldn't when the country was divided between the Wizard and the Wicked Witches of the East and West et al., prior to Dorothy's arrival.
Most intriguingly, in The Emerald City of Oz, when the Nome King considers invading Oz, he is told by a minion, General Guph, that Glinda the Good's castle is located "at the north of the Emerald City," when it has been established that Glinda rules the South. Guph may have gotten his facts muddled, as none of the Nomes had been to Oz at that time, but it portends the depiction of Glinda as the Good Witch of the North rather than the South in the 1939 MGM film (which is the most widely known version of Oz to date).
General Guph also tells the Nome King that Glinda "commands the spirits of the air, this statement made by Guph once again foreshadows a much later cinematic rendition of Glinda, in the film version of the Broadway musical The Wiz in which Glinda is responsible for the twister that brings Dorothy's house to Oz and sets all subsequent events into motion.
Of all the characters in L. Frank Baum's Oz, Glinda is the most enigmatic. Despite being titled "Glinda the Good," she is not a one-dimensional caricature whose sole purpose is to embody and generate all that is generically considered "good," as indicated above.
She ultimately becomes the adult anchor in the Oz books, because she is never distracted or swayed, and always maintains absolute firmness of purpose - something that cannot be said for the other adult characters in the series such as the Wizard and the Shaggy Man or even the Good Witch of the North. They all fall short of Glinda's wisdom and resoluteness.
In the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, Glinda is the Good Witch of the North, not the South as in the book. Glinda performs the functions of not only the novel's Good Witch of the North and Good Witch of the South, but also the novel's Queen of Field Mice, by being the one who welcomes Dorothy to Oz, sends her "off to see the Wizard," and orchestrates her rescue from the deadly poppy field in addition to revealing the secret to going back home.
That is what most of the Oz the books have to say about Glinda but there are those who have a different tale to tell. Oma Linda has another version that you may care to read and then you can decide for yourself. Is Glinda the witch she’s purported to be? Or has it all been a cover-up to keep us all safe but confused? Who knows? Maybe after reading what Oma Linda has to say you might have other ideas and decide to join ‘Team Green’.
The following is a list of books that have been written about Oz starting with the one you all are most familiar with.

Note: The book cover art that appears throughout the list are from the works of L. Frank Baum.
Books of Oz have been published as recently as 2011 and no doubt there will be more in the future.  This book list I put together has over sixty titles written by numerous authors although many fans believe the only books of Oz worth reading are the ones written by Baum.
If you believe that to be true you just might be missing out on reading some very entertaining books. For the most part I’ve enjoyed each and every one that I’ve read although there are some that were written more for children than those of us who are only child-like.
I have only one post left for my Celebrate Oz offerings that is the one tomorrow where Dillywink will find out where he’ll be spending his time in the future. If you’re interested in finding out where that will be come back here tomorrow and see. Once again, you have until midnight tonight to enter the drawing.
Hope you’re having a great weekend and as always, thanks for stopping by.
